Front entrance locked over building safety concerns around cladding.
Early Tuesday afternoon, Facilities and Security Services took to the front entrance of BCU's Curzon Building to close it under safety concerns. This decision was taken after advice from Willmott Dixon, original building contractors for the building, having discovered that one of the bricks used to clad the building had fallen off onto the 5th floor balcony, attached to the Vice-Chancellor's Office.
Entry and exit was redirected to the Curzon B entrance to the building, next to the Eagle and Ball pub, and the front of the building was cordoned off. While temporarily inaccessible, the Curzon Campus Shop remained accessible for the duration.
During the day of Thursday 8th, scaffolding was delivered and constructed over the entrance and teams determined it safe to re-open the front entrance to all staff, students and visitors. The scaffolding will facilitate works to assess the brick cladding on the building to ensure all bricks are secure on the building and to carry out remedial works to secure any loose bricks to keep the front face of the £63 million building safe.
