CATCH GZA AT THE BALLROOM?

This week, the What’s On Team found themselves in the dressing room of arguably the biggest Hip Hop lyricist in the world – find out what happened when we met GZA …
Hip Hop is under regeneration. The relaunch of Heducation and a collaboration with the thriving Birmingham Ballroom is bringing West Midland’s Hip Hop talent back to the surface.
The people arriving to the gig for it’s early evening start are as much a part of the revival as the world-renowned headline act. A few names in local talent included HLI, Sonny Jim, Idyllic and DJ Mylz, making the kind of Hip Hop ‘your parents scream at you to turn down’.
…And the night was headlined by none other than Hip Hop hero GZA – of the hugely influential Wu-Tang Clan. His vocal grip on the awed crowd proved why they call him Genius.
The songs were 90’s classics, but the crowd was fresh and diverse, with Brummie fans with heard battling the lyrics out with ‘the big smoke’ himself.
With ‘W’s in the air on everyones hands, the lyricist responded “tonight those W’s mean three things, the Wu-Tang Clan, Whitney Houston, and the O.D.B”
But how do legends of Hip Hop stay on top of their game? We caught up with GZA and his team after the show, when they said they love to eat healthily and chill out to classical music… and true to their word we found the dressing room full of hundreds of bottles of water, pomegranate juice, bananas, apples, coat-pocket-full’s of couscous salads!!?
